Smoke Alarms: Replacing More Than the Batteries
Any parent who has helped their child move into their first home has likely bestowed the same wisdom – change the furnace filters, refill the salt in the water softener, and remember to change the smoke alarm batteries during Daylight Saving changes (twice per year) in the name of fire safety.
All helpful tips, but one in particular is not entirely accurate.
The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) does recommend replacing the batteries at least once a year. But more importantly, they recommend replacing the entire unit every 8-10 years. Only then can you ensure fire safety.
Minnesota homeowners may have 3-4 smoke detectors, others have 10-15. Minnesota regulations require you install a smoke alarm on every floor, including the basement, as well as within 10 feet from each bedroom door. This should be a smoke detector and carbon monoxide combination.
To ensure compliance with state code, hiring an electrical professional is often the safest route. Horizon Electric Company is happy to help with initial installment, as well as replacements every 8-10 years, as recommended by the USFA.
